The scheme of soil classification which finds most favour among scientists to-day has come from Russia and is the work of a band of brilliant and enthusiastic investigators whose labours have brought some order to what was otherwise chaos. The object of this communication is to endeavour to show how it is possible to modify the views of this school so as to make them apply to British conditions, and how the majority of British soils may be brought within the envisaged scheme.

The detailed examination of humus soils of various kinds is becoming of increasing importance in view of the schemes now on foot for the reclamation of much heath and moor land. One of the most important things to establish has seemed to the authors to be the amount of nitrogen existing in the form of ammonia or of ammonium compounds, as it is possible that a knowledge of this figure might form a basis for a more scientific classification of soil organic matter than at present exists.

1. When a peat, as obtained from the bog, is dried, considerable changes occur in the amount of ammoniacal nitrogen removable by distillation with magnesia under reduced pressure.
2. Removal of water causes a relative increase in the amount of ammonia extractable by water. This is due to a reduction in the absorptive colloidal properties of the peat.
3. A partial recovery in the absorptive power takes place on prolonged contact with water.
The Flocculation of Turbid Liquids by Salts

It has long been recognised that a trace of soluble salt will bring about the flocculation of the material suspended in a turbid liquid; and because of its bearing upon such practical matters as the clearing of drinking water, the deposition of silt at the mouths of estuaries, and the improvement of the texture of heavy soils, the process has received a considerable amount of investigation. It is probably related to the flocculation of colloids by similar reagents; the fine particles of clay which chiefly cause the turbidity of natural waters being composed of a hydrated silicate of alumina and other bases possessing properties akin to those of the colloids. Indeed Schloesing has proposed to call that portion of clay material which remains obstinately suspended in water, sometimes for days together, ‘colloid clay,’ as something distinct in kind from the other particles in the soil. However it is reasonable to suppose that the distinction between the ‘colloid’ clay and the rest is in the main one of size, the colloid particles being so small as to be beyond the limits of microscopic vision, just as the trae colloids may be regarded as consisting of very large molecules, lying between the molecules which go into solution and the molecular aggregates that remain in water as suspended solids.

The formation of Iron Pan or Ortstein is of fairly frequent occurrence both in Britain and on the Continent of Europe. It is of some economic importance, for where it occurs considerable expense has to be incurred before it is possible to grow a crop of any kind on the soil. The Pan consists of a hard layer of material which has to be broken through for successful cultivation, as it is cemented together in such a manner as to prevent any penetration of plant roots and to limit the circulation of air and water.

In a previous paper to this Journal by one of us it was observed that if a solution of a ferric salt be placed in contact with peat from which all the ferrous salts had been previously removed by boiling with hydrochloric acid, there was an immediate production of ferrous iron in the solution.

Basic Slag owes its value as a source of phosphoric acid to the fact that it is essentially basic in its character, and can be used on land where an acid manure of the character of superphosphate is not to be recommended.
As no figures were available on the subject it seemed interesting to determine how much of the lime which it contains existed in the free uncombined condition. It has been stated that in some cases this is as much as 20%.
With a view to this determination four samples of freshly ground slag were obtained direct from the makers through the kindness of the Lawes Chemical Manure Company.
